Thank you for your interest in the 2010 Engineering Expo. This will be a different competition from previous years. We redesigned the competition to offer students a full day of activities, discover what engineering really is, and level the playing field for scholarship winnings. Students that attend Expo on March 30th, 2010 will walk away with a better understanding of not only what engineers are capable of but what they themselves are capable of as well.
The 2010 Engineering Expo scholarship competition will be based on how teams fair at tackling an impromptu engineering problem posed to them the day of Expo. This years Expo theme, "Expo, Where Ideas Take Flight", lends itself to an aeronautical engineering based problem. Students will have to solve this design problem using materials provided at the competition during the time allotted to them. After demonstrating their solutions, three winning teams will be awarded scholarship totals in the amount of $1500 for first place, $1000 for second place, and $500 for third place. These winnings will be split by team members and can be redeemed if the scholarship winner attends Purdue University's West Lafayette campus. NOTE TO PREVIOUS COMPETITION PARTICIPANTS: There will be no formal design portion of the competition this year. Consequently, all scholarship awards will be based on Impromptu Competition scores only.
In addition to the engineering competition there are also a host of other activities students will participate in during the day. A keynote speaker will give an interactive presentation to students related to aeronautical engineering. An academic fair will be open for students to visit which will have a broad variety of engineering disciplines and organizations represented. Participants will also be able to hear from college of engineering students and ask them questions about engineering, college coursework, and college life. Finally, lunch will be provided and teams will get a chance to eat with a current engineering student.
Engineering Expo is designed to be a hands-on, immersive experience that allows attendees to learn about what engineering is from many different perspectives. The goal is to keep students engaged for the entire time they are at Expo. They will have opportunities to learn about engineering but also apply that knowledge in a competition format. Give your students the chance to win scholarship money, visit an engineering university, and apply the knowledge they have gained from your classroom at the 2010 Engineering Expo!
